You have closed the deal and are now the proud owner of a new house. Unfortunately, the stress is just beginning; not just for you, but for Poofypaws, your darling little cat. Here are some tips to eliminate some of the difficulties inherent in moving your cat from your old home to the new.

The final days leading up to the move are going to be the most stressful for Poofykins. As much as possible, keep to her schedule. If she normally gets fed at 8, feed her at 8. If you regularly have a game of Chase the String at 7, try to drag the string around for a couple of minutes every day. Try to maintain the illusion that everything is normal – despite the growing pile of boxes in the living room.

The day before the move, feed Poofy about half as much as she normally gets. On the day of the move, don’t feed her at all. Not only will this minimize her projectile vomiting a ball of goo into the back of your head; it will make her associate the new house with something positive once you pop her into her holding room.

The holding room is a room in your new home that you have marked ahead of time to hold Poofy until the moving is over. It should be free from a lot of junk, exits or unsecured windows. An empty bedroom is good. Make sure that any closets or exits are closed and can’t be opened by an enterprising paw. After the movers have left, check on Poofy. If she seems calm, you can leave her again. If she is nervous, try spending a few minutes petting her and calming her down. If she makes a habit of it, ask your former neighbors to make life hard for her and the new tenants of your house to make it clear that she is unwelcome.

Although this can be difficult, it doesn’t have to be. When it comes time to physically move the cat, transport the cat in a familiar pet carrier.  If you have to buy a new pet carrier, buy it a week or two before the move.  Leave the carrier open in a place the cat normally spends time.  Inside the carrier, place some familiar things like toys, a cushion, etc.  The cat(s) will get used to seeing it and should go in and out, familiarizing itself with it and not associating it with anything negative.

Prior to the movers arriving at the new house, you should have set up a room with the cat’s familiar surroundings, such as a condo/tree, cat bed, litter box, food and water bowls and toys. A large note should be taped to the outside of the door of this room, stating “Do Not Enter”, to remind family members as well as the movers. Then, after all of the movers have left, open the door and let the cat roam around it’s new home.   It won’t take long, maybe a day or two, for the cat(s) to accept their new home.

Outside access should only be given with supervision until you are sure the cat has accepted the move and it’s new surroundings and won’t try to run back to the old house.  Even if your move is hundreds of miles from the old house, the cat doesn’t know that and may try to find it’s way back.  This is, most often, the reason people lose their cats after a move.

Bad breath is another unhealthy sign. Your cat should have strong white teeth without odor. Dry cat food will give them strong gums, good healthy teeth, and that will give them clean breath.

Symptoms of flea allergy include hair loss, redness, and sometimes sores known as hot spots. Symptoms of diabetes in your cat include excessive urination and drinking along with weight loss or sudden obesity. If you find that your cat develops diabetes you need to carefully regulate diet and monitor blood sugar levels.

Fleas carry many diseases and can transmit these to your cats. Fleas carry the tapeworm cyst inside them and your cat inevitably swallows fleas during routine grooming .When this happens it is then that the tapeworm hatches and grows in your cat’s stomach. Natural flea control methods and products provide a safer alternative to chemical insecticides. If you cannot reasonably control fleas with this “safer” approach, then consider stronger measures.

Vaccinations (‘shots’) can help keep your cat from getting many of the serious diseases which can make your cat sick, or may even threaten your cat’s life. Your cat’s individual lifestyle and situation will determine which vaccinations your cat needs to have and how often these vaccines need to be given. You will need to keep the shots up to date.

Remember that the main reason to spay is to prevent pregnancy, not to eliminate a cat’s normal behavior, however, removing the ovaries also reduces the risk or mammary cancer.
